The winning entries in our big post horn competition

The post horn is a Swiss cultural asset and is linked to many different emotions. This is demonstrated by the 100 or so works submitted to the big PostBus anniversary competition “Do the Du-Da-Do”. 14 of these entries have won a main prize.

Anniversary competition result

100 years, 100 works. In June, PostBus launched its public competition to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the post horn. By mid-August, participants had taken the time to submit their entries in the four categories of “Singing/dancing”, “Photos/videos”, “Writing” and “Artwork”. In the end, exactly 100 works were vying for the main prizes. The jury were spoilt for choice, selecting the winners from high-quality entries. The jury was made up of the following five people:

  • Rachel Grüninger, PostBus driver and influencer, Ticino
  • Nora Haldemann, Curator at the Museum of Communication, Bern
  • Sébastien Dufaut, Head of PostBus Strategy & Innovation
  • Luzi Weber, Head of PostBus Communication, Member of Swiss Post Art Committee
  • Simon Glauser, PostBus Communication employee, singer in the band “FraktionsZwang”, videocaster

Winner of the “Singing/dancing” category

The jury’s favourite entry was the dialect song “Stiig ii” (Climb aboard) by theatre and film composer Moritz Lieberherr from St. Gallen. In the form of a precisely composed video, this four-minute mini-musical depicts everyday scenes from the lives of passengers based on “several true events and some untrue ones” (quotation from Moritz Lieberherr).

Winner of the “Photos/videos” category

The pleasant, technically sophisticated animation by Andrin Hess from Frauenfeld, Canton of Thurgau, is 11 seconds long. A Postbus travels around and up a hill set in a green cartoon landscape, while the “Du-Da-Do” sound of a bus stop announcement can be heard, accompanied by the twittering of birds.

Winner of the “Writing” category

The “Writing” category received the most entries – in fact, second and third places were both awarded to two works. The entries included fictional stories, creative accounts of autobiographical events and poems. The winner was Caroline Seeger from Liestal, Canton of Basel-Landschaft, with her romantic short story “Das Posthorn der Liebe” (The post horn of love). The story is about two women from different eras who both fall in love with a PostBus driver. It ends with the sentence: “But the old post horn still hangs in pride of place above the door in our apartment, reminding us every day of the enormous luck we had when we found our soulmates in the post horn’s triad.”

Winner of the “Artwork” category

It could easily be the design for a new stamp: winner Luca Gianinazzi from Piotta, Canton of Ticino, merged the Italian triad “Pi-Po-Pa” into one harmonious mosaic. The image “100 ipnotic pi-po-pa” (100 hypnotic pi-po-pas) is made up of several thousand components and was drawn stealthily by hand shortly before the entry deadline. The artist has incorporated the striking brand elements of the post horn and the Swiss Post logo, as well as the anniversary number of 100.

Award ceremony at the Museum of Communication

At the end of September 2024, the 14 prize winners travelled from all over the country for a celebration at the Museum of Communication in Bern, where they received their awards in front of the jury. In addition to the main prizes, there were also attractive secondary prizes for places four to 50.

PostFinance would like to congratulate the winners and thank all participants for their creative entries. They have shown that the post horn still evokes a great deal of emotions, even 100 years after its introduction, and is a Swiss cultural asset!
